The sense of balance or equilibrioception is one of the physiological senses related to balance.
Balance is the result of a number of body systems working together: the eyes (visual system), ears (vestibular system) and the body’s sense of where it is in space (proprioception) ideally need to be intact.
How do we sense balance?
The ear is a sensory organ that picks up sound waves, allowing us to hear. It is also essential to our sense of balance: the organ of balance (the vestibular system) is found inside the inner ear. It is made up of three semicircular canals and two otolith organs, known as the utricle and the saccule.
How does the ear balance the body?
The semicircular canals of the inner ear help you with balance. When you move your head, fluid inside the semicircular canals moves as well. This movement of the fluid moves the hairs of the canals, creating nerve impulses that travel up to your brain and let it know that your head is off balance.
Is pain a sense?
Pressure, temperature, light touch, vibration, pain and other sensations are all part of the touch sense and are all attributed to different receptors in the skin. Touch isn’t just a sense used to interact with the world; it also seems to be very important to a human’s well-being.
What part of the body controls balance?
The cerebellum, in the back of the brain, controls balance, coordination and fine muscle control (e.g., walking). It also functions to maintain posture and equilibrium.
